How to Boost Emotional Resilience
What is emotional resilience and why is it so important? Whether you like it or not, life is not a smooth and easy road. From time to time you’re going to suffer setbacks and defeats. You’re going to have good days, bad days and may even experience tragedies (if this hasn’t happened to you yet, then count yourself lucky!)
The point is that you need to learn how to cope with difficult times. This is one of the most important life skills that you can develop. Unfortunately, many people are completely unable to do this.
They often find themselves wiped out by the ups and down of life. Worse than that, many people use food, alcohol or even drugs as a crutch to deal with their problems. This is something you cannot do, as it will only compound your issues.
Learning Emotional Resilience Is a Far Better Idea
Believe it or not, emotional resilience is learnable. Once mastered, you can use it to sail through life’s biggest challenges with relative ease. But how do you do this? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
1. Take care of your health.
Emotional resilience starts with good health. This means you need to nourish your body with healthy food, exercise regularly and set time aside to relax and get enough sleep. You may also want to take up activities like yoga and meditation.
2. Connect with others.
It’s simply a fact that isolated people feel anxious, depressed and are often unable to cope. To prevent this you need to maintain an active social life and spend time with friends and family. More than anything remember your self-care is your self-respect. If you notice your environment and people are draining you? You need to raise your standards, you need stronger boundaries. Sometimes what others demand from us can be harmful for us, we need to normalise saying no to unreasonable request.
3. Set goals for yourself.
Goal setting and achievement is an important part of becoming a better, stronger person. Achieving goals forces you to grow. It also means you have to overcome hurdles, difficulties and setbacks. Doing this will make you an emotionally stronger person.
4. Keep a journal.
Journaling is a proven way to improve your outlook on life. It helps you release negative thoughts, emotions, and gain perspective. Keeping a journal is also a great way to remind yourself that bad times come and go.
5. Maintain a positive attitude.
As corny as it may sound, there is power in positive thinking. If your outlook is bleak then you’re never going to get anywhere. You need to ruthlessly weed out negative thoughts and replace them with positive, uplifting ideas. Yes, this may sound delusional to some people, but if you keep at it long enough, your inner self will eventually align with what’s going on outside of you.
The bottom line is that difficult situations are often blessings in disguise. That being said, this is only true if you allow them to help you. This means you have to learn how to use your problems as a stepping stone towards being a better person. While this may sound like a cliché or even a meaningless platitude, it really is the truth!
